Retired Armenian Police Officer Arrested For Spying For Azerbaijan

Armenian security officers have arrested a former police officer on allegations of spying for Azerbaijan.

Armenia's National Security Service (HAAT) said on February 5 that 61-year-old retired police Colonel Khachik Martirosian was arrested in Yerevan on January 31.

The HAAT officials said the suspect had established links with Azerbaijani secret services via the Azerbaijani Embassy in Georgia last August and had collected secret information related to Armenia's military.

Armenian agents intercepted the delivery of the information to Baku and arrested Martirosian.

He faces a charge of high treason and could be sentenced to up to 15 years in jail if found guilty.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in conflict since the 1990s over Azerbaijan’s breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is currently controlled by Yerevan.

Based on reporting by Interfax and aysor.am

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
