Armenia Concerned By Attack On Priests In Georgia

Armenia has expressed concern regarding an attack on priests at the Armenian Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin in Georgia's capital, Tbilisi.

Armenian Foreign Ministry spokesman Tigran Balaian said on July 21 that Yerevan expects a thorough and unbiased investigation into the incident by Georgian authorities.

The Georgian eparchy of the Armenian Apostolic Church released a statement on the incident in Tbilisi on July 19.

It said the incident began after an argument between a woman, who parked her car near the Armenian church, and churchgoers and priests.

It said some 50 locals attacked Armenian priest Manuk Zeynalian near the church, beating him and tearing off a cross he was wearing around his neck.

It is unclear if an investigation into the incident has been launched.
