The presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed to accelerate talks aimed at settling the conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

In a statement issued today following talks mediated by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, the two leaders praised the work of the Minsk Group of mediators and noted that "considerable work" had been done since their last meeting in November 2010.

Interfax quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying the two leaders had also agreed to "move away from maximalist positions."

Nagorno-Karabakh is a region of Azerbaijan where ethnic Armenians -- backed by Yerevan -- fought a war against Baku in the 1990s.

The situation has been regulated by a cease-fire agreement since 1994.

Actually, your plan was proposed by both Azerbaijan and Armenia I believe some 10 years ago, giving Armenia Lachin region and Azerbaijan Meghri region, but both presidents Aliyev and Kocharyan stepped back after it sparked public outrage.

The thing is, Armenia and Azerbaijan both want it all, if possible without any or any serious concession from their part. Any other suggestion that might hamper this, they do not want to hear about it.

Never! What is this? You think Armenia will succumb our border with Iran? Your idea is very ridiculous.

What is more important: a border with Iran or open borders for free commerce and circulation of people between Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan?

Anyway, if both Armenia and Azerbaijan don’t make territorial concessions of any kind, there will be a perpetual deadlock, perpetual fruitless conversations and the perpetual threat of war…

Add a land corridor between Armenia and Iran from a Turkey side. Armenia, as a landlocked country, will never give up its border with Iran.

Your comments are very funny. Why does Armenia need opened borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan? Armenia doesn't need any free commerce with these not civilized states.

I really don’t see why Turkey and Azerbaijan would be “less civilized” countries than Iran…

Yes, of course, but our borders with Iran are about 30 km. So there couldn't be any negative effect. And don't forget that Armenia needs opened borders with Iran.

So I guess we now know why the talks have been fruitless so far.

Azerbaijan: Lets make territorial trades and correct geopoltical difficties. This would allow our peoples to freely travel and trade and it would also allow the region to prosper. Imagine Armenia participating in regional projects from the Caspian Sea. Furthermore it would prevent future hostilities between our people. So what do you say?

Armenia: Never! Die you infidels!

"The Turk is the brother of the Armenian and they know it."
William Saroyan, From "Inhale and Exhale," 1935

Armenians are not Caucasians! Armenia was established artificially in the Caucasus only in XIX century by Russians after a series Russo-Turkish and Russo-Persian wars.
