YEREVAN -- Armenian Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian has touted South Sudan's declaration of independence as a blueprint for resolving other ethnic and territorial conflicts, RFE/RL's Armenian Service reports.

"The declaration of independent statehood in South Sudan is a realization of peoples' equality and impregnable right to self-determination and yet another example of the civilized resolution of conflicts," Nalbandian said in a specially written statement on July 9.

The Armenian government and the Armenian leadership in the breakaway Azerbaijani territory of Nagorno-Karabakh in January welcomed an internationally recognized referendum in South Sudan that cleared the final hurdle to its secession from the northern part of the country.

Nalbandian said the referendum outcome highlighted "the victory march of the right to self-determination."

Official Yerevan and Karabakh Armenians hope the emergence of a new country will set another precedent for a resolution of the Karabakh conflict along the lines they seek.

Nalbandian insisted in January that South Sudan's independence will strengthen the Armenian case for international recognition of Karabakh's secession from Azerbaijan.

The principle of self-determination has long been championed by the Armenian side in its negotiations with Azerbaijan.

The United States, Russia, and France -- which have been jointly mediating those talks -- recognize that principle along with the territorial integrity of states. A combination of the two principles is at the heart of the "basic principles" of a Karabakh settlement put forward by them.

A key element of the proposed settlement is a future referendum on Karabakh's final status. Armenian officials say the disputed territory's predominantly Armenian population would be able to vote for independence or reunification with Armenia.

But Azerbaijani leaders say, at least in public, that the would-be vote should only determine the extent of Karabakh's autonomy within Azerbaijan.

The Armenian and Karabakh leaderships similarly hailed last year a United Nations court ruling that upheld the legality of Kosovo's secession from Serbia.

Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian said in October that the nonbinding ruling, handed down by the International Court of Justice in July 2010, should serve as a blueprint for the Karabakh settlement.

But Sarkisian's government has thus far stopped short of recognizing Kosovo, which has been recognized by 76 countries. Analysts say Yerevan is anxious not to irk Moscow, Armenia's close ally which is strongly opposed to the ethnic-Albanian populated territory's independence.

As of today, Azerbaijan had not recognized South Sudan's independence. A Foreign Ministry official contacted by RFE/RL refused to comment on whether Baku would soon recognize South Sudan.

South Sudan is a perfect model for solving the problems of occupied Anatolia. It should and will be divided between its rightful indigenious peoples - the Kurds , the Greeks and the Armenians. The persian province of azeristan should and will be given back to Iran..No need for referendums-the us troops from Iraq and Afganistan should do the job on their way back home.A little Yugoslavia style bombing will help solve the problem in no time. But that will be if pres. Obama is really black and no yellow.

Right, Bill, like dreamers do, I forgot, first things first - all bloody britishers should leave Iberia &go back to their scandinavian homelands & pay back for the centuries of barbarian abuse & misrule. Its high time for the scots, the irish & the welsh to invade their neighbours & do them exactly what the viking bastards did some 20 centuries ago.

Anaturk - means mother Turk, and Kemal - male name. Then, you get a woman's surname and male name. Maybe, that's why such stupid allegations come to your head. Savvy Kurds could not talk so, knowing what Armenians did in the Kurdistan, hundreds of thousands of Kurds were killed by Armenian terrorists in 1915. Kurds, Turks and Iranians fought shoulder to shoulder against the bandit groups Andranika and Balayan. If it were not for them the unity of the Armenian bandits would destroy all. They started the genocide of the Kurds, who came to the rescue of the Turks and Iranians. Mother Turk you should know about objective history of Kurdistan, then you would realize that you're playing a flute in another country.
During World War I, Armenian bandits began with the extermination of the Kurds. Turks came to the help refugees of Kurds, who by force of arms subdued presumptuous Armenian criminals, murderers of women and children.
Kurds have right to raise a claim in international courts for genocide by Armenians. Turns out that Kurd, to atone for the sins of criminals in the image of Mother Turk

Wow, I did not know what garbage and propaganda they teach in Baku until I read Sara's puerile comments. If the Armenians in Anatolia, who were citizens of the Ottoman Empire, so powerful to commit genocide against the Turks and Kurds, then how come there are no Armenians left in Eastern Turkey today, out of a population of 2 Million and you have more than 12 million Kurds living in Eastern Turkey alone today, not to mention the millions of Turks. I travelled all across Eastern Turkey. One ominous thing you notice are all the Armenian churches, homes, currently occuppied by Turks and Kurds. Even in churches, there is no mention of the word "Armenian". You can spend an entire day in the City of Ani, and you will be hard pressed among the dozens of churches, to see the word "Armenian". What you see are old 1000 year old churches converted to mosques with new minarets. Fact is, if Sara was educated in the civilized world, she would have knows all Armenians were driven out of their homes and their belongings taken over by Turks and Kurds. If you had half a brain, you would have had the sagacitty to know that you don't cull your own citizens, which the Armenians were citizens of the Ottoman Empire. The other funny thing is how Turks and Azeris blame Armenians of committing genocide against Turks, when Turkey was one of the largest and most powerful empires in the world compared to the Armenian population being so small compared to the rest of the people of Anatolia.

What a joke, Armenia changing its position every few months. Armenia facing disasterous economy, collapsing demography, dependency on Russia for finances and military. What Armenia? Armenia is a Russian colony.
