Armenia Fined For Refusal To Take Part In Eurovision Song Contest

x
TEXT SIZE - +
The European Broadcasting Union has imposed a fine on Armenia over Yerevan's refusal to send performers to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest in Baku, capital of Armenia's rival, Azerbaijan.

The European Broadcasting Union said Armenia would still have to pay the full fee required to participate in the contest, as well as an additional 50 percent of that amount as a fine.

Details about the amounts of money involved were not immediately available.

The European Broadcasting Union, which is responsible for managing Eurovision, also said Armenian public television was obliged to show the May 26 Eurovision finals live.

Otherwise, Armenia could be excluded from the 2013 Eurovision contest.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been embroiled for decades in their conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, an ethnic-Armenian-populated enclave inside Azerbaijan.

Interesting reasoning...
Armenian artists's security cannot be guaranteed...at least according to purported statements made by the Azerbaydjani president. Some Azeris and their government seem to perceive all Armenians to be the enemies of Azerbaydjan (at least according to some articles in the news and to some comments made by some Azeris...)
Hence, it seems reasonable that
1. either Armenians go there to bring people together and to contribute to overcoming prejudices (yet not being an artist who might get killed by an attack...I understand the decision of the Armenians) or
2. all European nations boycott the event since Aliyevs' remarks about Armenians and their security are not really in the spirit of a peaceful rapprochement with Armenia which actually could have been brought about through the visit, hospitality and maybe mutual projects in the future to reduce tensions...(Yet, of course this is also not the most pleasant perspective...)
3. Why not involve Russian and European mediators...? It's not about Nagorny-Karabax...it might about a symbolic gestures...and music...

So, in any case, many people in other nations consider this episode in terms of the looming and ominous threats...and the belligerent attitude and polarization...utterly embarrassing...

"Despite the fact that the Azerbaijani authorities have given security guarantees to all participating countries, several days ago the Azerbaijani president made a statement that enemy number one for Azerbaijan were the Armenians," the TV said in a statement quoted by AFP news agency. In: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-17292360
...anyway, just another aspect that adds to the bad imagery for Azerbaydjan... (apart from corruption with police involved, forced evictions from homes...nepotism...)
...eventually...the European Broadcast Union is truly disappointed at the Armenian decision...and then fines Armenia?
Why not instead ask for the President's guarantees to secure the artists' safety?
or try to bring about a solution to the unprecedented crisis?
...?

Armenian propagation is collapsed! Armenia decided not to participate from the very outset, because they hadn’t any participant to be sent to the Eurovision Song Contest. All participations of Armenia have been resulted with sheer failure…

The safety guarantee of the Armenian participants was ensured and Armenian authority knows it very well. The EBU has also paid attention to this fact in its statement.

From the very outset Armenian authority wanted to use Eurovision 2012 as a facility of a slander company against Azerbaijan, but they couldn’t do that.

Armenia is remained alone and isolated again.

To hell with this stupid show, Armenia has a national sovereignty that should bow to NO ONE. If Eurovision wants to exclude Armenia from its BS show, let it be, we do not want to participate inside Azerbaijan which is murdering Armenian soldiers daily. If Eurovision cannot see that crime and awards Azerbaijan, Armenia should take Eurovision to court for infringing over its national soverign borders.

If you wish to use the sovereignty argument, then this should be equally applied i.e. NK and other occupied regions, are sovereign Azeri territory as recognized by the UN and pretty much every other country on this planet.

But yes, it is a silly show.

You are wrong about that. After the Soviet collapse, Armenia declared independence. So did Azerbaijan. So did the republic of NK. And when the savage Azeri tried to stop NK through force, invasion and massacres, it got a bloody nose. Thus only NK has a right to decide its future and its territory. End of story.

The UN and "other countries" did not stop Azeri aggression, and were not there to save Armenians from imminent destruction, therefore their opinion as to what "territorial integrity" means is utterly irrelevant.

The Euro-blind vision song and belly dance contest people should exclude the armenians from their list,as they are not europeans and it should accept real European countries with real european demockratic values-that is Pakistan,North Korea,Uaziristan,Talibanistan,Azeri Djendemistan and last but not least-Cuba-these are the lands which gave us real demockracy and we should all join our voices singing our prayers for them. And congratulations to this year`s winner-the greatest Azaran Bulbul-the 1000voiced nightingale of all time-good old forever young SultanChenghiz Ilhan, whose belly dancing is second to none-well maybe Eugenio or Jack can do better if their commissar chiefs order them!!!

That's totally stupid. A country shouldn't be Forced to participate in a politically-manipulated show such at this one. What you tried to show Brussels?? that ''everything is Ok, there's no problems between anyone :)''??. Well, again the same euro-blind people who are keeping alive a 'zombie-country' once called ''Bosnia-Herzegovina''. The same about the inventated Kosovo, actually being used to train muslimana-jihadis from Syria.

And well, the same Euro-blinds who usually tried to show the world they were Perfect! and now they are facing their own collapse.

And now they are bowing to nazi Azerbaijan because they have a little more oil?? xD.

Good Luck there Europe... your show has just worsened the human rights situation inside ''Azerbaijan'', and will ensure Nazi ''Azerbaijan'' with 'New Energy' to boost their Nazi propaganda copied from Nazi-Turkey (''Gray Wolfs''? Lol animals xD).

Always commiting mistakes Europe.. you never learn xD.

Unfortunately, cultural activities and sports is always directly linked to policy..
"These activities should not be linked to policy"-may say one or the other politician..but the various kinds of international cultural and sports competitions will always be associated with the policy.
Even Russia's decision to send in Baku, a nursing home -is a political decision.
Today, everyone is saying to boycott one or another international event-ordinary citizens, politicians, mental hospitals patients, sure Mr.Whitmore think about it, from another side very well that he does not say it loud..
so Boycotts should be treated easily -if someone does not want to... let them not come.
for example:
At the Olympics in Sochi, no one came due to a conviction of Pussy Riot and аbkhaz criminals who established racism and apartheid...
Empty stands and only Mr. Whitmore, sits and bored...
but Earth continues to spinning and the sun warms..

There are propbably 2 reasons why Armenia does not participate:

a*) they do not want to lose again;
b) May be they are planning another terror attack in Azerbaijan? There is a long list of armenian terror attacks on the territory of Azerbaijan, while Azerbaijan is patiently negotiating with armenian separatists Karabakhs issues.

Though I am pretty sure Azerbaijan security will make sure that nobody will get hurt during ESC.

I wonder, maybe there is one more reason: maybe it's just that in Armenia people happen to have GOOD TASTE and for this reason do not find it necessary to take part in a contest of crapy noise that nationals of the nation of Beavus and Butthead have for some inexplicable reason called "music" one day? At any rate, one can only be glad for the Armenians that they will not hear this time around any of the trashy "songs" that are always sung in Eurovision. What was this "song" preformed by the boring young German lady called Lena, I think, two years ago: "Du hast der schönste Arsch der Welt"... Well, no further comment on this sort of "music"... And congratulations, Armenia!

Meine Liebling Herr Eugenio,in Armenia,as in every country of the region most people listen to their own type of kitchy oriental schmalz muzak-the armenian one is called rabiz.Beavis and Butthead are american cartoon characters, just like you and jack are real soviet type homunculus creations coming straight out of mikhail Bulgakov`s `A dog`s heart`.,you of course, being Butthead. And i think you should be proud of Lena,as she sang that gemutlich song just for your you know what.

Thanks Eugenio! I agree with what you've just said above. I just can't stop surprising how the world is corrupted. Shame on those fake people that pretend to not see the real problems. And respect to people like you. P.S. I saw two pointless comments here about Armenia's not participating I'm sure those comments are from Azeri people. Otherwise I don't understand how could someone be so blind...

Last year, I was in Vienna in May and I was really surprised by lack of interest in Eurovision so maybe you have a reason too to be proud of your people.Personally, I don't buy the claim that this show is watched by more than 100 million people around the world! I couldn't find even one bar in central Vienna to watch the show there and most people whom i spoke to didn't really give a $hit about it. Btw, congrats for having such a fabulous city, Vienna is magnificent in spring.

Armenian establishments in Yerevan realize well that no one is going to cancel “Eurovision” because of their “boycott”. They also understand perfectly that time when primitive Armenian propaganda could denigrate Azerbaijan and Azerbaijanis with impunity has already passed. .

An audience the Armenian propaganda could have some influence upon has significantly reduced in the recent decade. That’s why the authorities attempt to use the most of the fading “power” of the propaganda. As the date of the contest to be held in Baku approaches, we will witness some other vain efforts by Armenians to disrupt it.

I guess it’s not worth mentioning once again that the “Armenian boycott” has never provoked either appreciation or approval.

Iosif Prigojin, a famous Russian producer, was one of the first to respond the Armenian call to boycott “Eurovision 2012”: “I believe the contest will be none the worse for the absence of the Armenian delegation”, – he said.

I think the issue is settled.

P.S.
Baku is one of the applicants to host the Olympic Games in 2020. A good reason for Armenians to plan a boycott of the Olympics as an “anti-Armenian event”…
