Armenian Vendors Continue Protesting New Tax Law

YEREVAN -- Hundreds of private vendors in Armenia have rallied in Yerevan against a new taxation law.

The protesters on January 29 first protested at government headquarters, demanding a meeting with Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamian.

The vendors say the new law due to come into force on February 1 would cause price hikes and decrease their profits.

The protesters object to a provision in the law that requires all small- and medium-sized business owners with profits of up to 58 million drams ($122,000) per year to fill out forms showing the amount of goods they have sold.

After failing to meet Abrahamian, the demonstrators marched towards the presidential palace.

But police did not allow the protesters near the building.

The demonstrators say they will stop paying taxes and start a large-scale strike on February 1 unless their demands are met.

The vendors held a similar protest on January 26.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
