Alleged Mastermind Of Serbian Assassination Appears In Court

10 May 2004 -- The suspected organizer of the assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic appeared before a Belgrade court today.

Milorad Lukovic, also known as "Legija," asked the court for a 45-day recess to prepare his defense. The court responded to that request by adjourning the trial until 10 June.

Lukovic surrendered to police on 2 May after eluding arrest since Djindjic was gunned down by at least one gunman in March 2003.

A former commander of a special police unit and accused criminal boss, Lukovic had been on trial in absentia for Djinjic's killing since December, along with other suspects.

He also faces charges relating to the 2000 slaying of Ivan Stambolic, a former Serb president, and a 1999 assassination attempt on Vuk Draskovic, Serbia's current foreign minister.
