4 August 2004 -- Pakistani Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat says one of several suspected Al-Qaeda operatives arrested by security forces in recent days has "a multi-million dollar bounty on his head."

The minister refused to give any details about the suspect. Late on 3 August, he said the individual was among at least 18 Al-Qaeda suspects rounded up in eastern Pakistan in the past three weeks. Pakistani Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said yesterday terrorism will be defeated.

"We have entered the network of terrorism. We shall be successful. There will be a reaction; there will be repercussions, but in the end they [terrorists] will be defeated," Rashid Ahmed said.

U.S. officials have said information yielded in the recent capture of several suspected Al-Qaeda operatives in Pakistan led to the heightened terror alerts issued on 1 August for financial institutions in Washington and in the New York city area.
