6 October 2004 -- U.S. and Iraqi forces today conducted sweeping operations south of Baghdad and continued pounding suspected militant positions in the town of Al-Fallujah.

The U.S. military said U.S.-led forces arrested around 30 suspected militants in the sweep and seized a suspected militant training camp in Babil region. Babil has recently become notorious for kidnappings and ambushes.

In Al-Fallujah, U.S. warplanes attacked positions held by militants loyal to Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian militant who is believed to have ties to Al-Qaeda and currently the most wanted man in Iraq. There was no immediate word on casualties.

Also today, a roadside bomb exploded near a British patrol in the southern city of Al-Basrah, killing a least one Iraqi civilian and wounding several others.

And in Baq'ubah, three Kurdish militiamen and one civilian were killed in an ambush.
