The military statement said soldiers detained 69 of the suspected rebels today near the town of Yusufiyah.

In other developments today, the military said soldiers discovered a weapons cache -- the largest so far in Al-Fallujah -- in a truck parked at a mosque where the spiritual leader of the insurgents gave his sermons.

And Minister of State Qassim Dawud said soldiers from the Iraqi National Guard discovered a laboratory for making explosives and poisons in Al-Fallujah.

The U.S. State Department said one of its employees working with Iraqi education ministers was killed in Baghdad yesterday.

Police in Samarra said six Iraqi officers and four others were wounded today when a car bomb exploded in Samarra as a U.S.-Iraqi patrol was passing.
