In an interview posted on the Russian gazeta.ru website today, Berezovskii said his decision was motivated by his decision by his desire to live "closer to Russia."

The former media magnate, who is wanted in his home country on fraud charges he denies, has been living in London for the past two years. British authorities granted him political asylum in September 2003.

Speaking from London, Berezovskii told gazeta.ru he is confident neither Ukraine's new President Viktor Yushchenko, nor Prime Minister-elect Yuliya Tymoshenko will order him extradited to Russia.

He also said he had not consulted with Ukraine's new authorities before announcing his decision to move to this country.
