Blair Says Iran Is Sponsor Of Terrorism

8 February 2005 -- U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair today called Iran a state sponsor of terrorism and urged Tehran to meet European Union demands and renounce its suspected pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Blair made the comment at a Parliamentary committee meeting and was quoted as saying, "There is no doubt about that at all."

Blair's statement echoed comments from Washington, where U.S. President George W. Bush and other officials have called Iran the world's primary sponsor of terrorism.

Blair's comments came the same day that officials from the EU and Iran were due to meet in Geneva to hold a third round of talks on Iran's nuclear program.

The EU, led by Britain, France, and Germany, is seeking to persuade Iran to permanently halt sensitive nuclear work in exchange for economic and other benefits.
