Official Suggests Dissolved Kazakh Party Could Resume Activities

15 February 2005 -- The speaker of Kazakhstan's parliament suggested to the visiting OSCE chairman today that a recently dissolved opposition party might possibly be allowed to resume operating if it makes adjustments to its charter.
Ural Mukhamezhanov made his remarks in the Kazakh capital Astana to Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Chairman Dimitrij Rupel.
Mukhamezhanov told Rupel that if the Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan changed parts of its charter that Kazakh authorities have said are unconstitutional, it might be allowed to reorganize.
In January, a Kazakh court ordered the liquidation of the Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan, saying that some of its recent political statements had breached national security laws.
Rupel, who is also Slovenia's foreign minister, is due in Uzbekistan's capital Tashkent tomorrow for talks with top Uzbek officials.
