FSB: Will Pay $10 Million To Find Basaev

March 15, 2005

15 March 2005 -- Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) says it will pay $10 million for information leading to the man who has become the Kremlin's number one foe, radical Chechen commander Shamil Basaev.

The figure is the same amount that the authorities have said they paid informers who disclosed the location of Chechen rebel leader Aslan Maskhadov. Authorities said Maskhadov was killed in a special forces operation in the Chechen village of Tolstoy-Yurt last week.

Yesterday, authorities said they had blown up the house where Maskhadov was killed because they feared the building would have been booby-trapped.

Some human rights activists said the building may have been blown up to destroy any evidence that could cast doubt on official accounts of Maskhadov's killing.
