The Iraqi Interior Ministry said three policemen were among those injured. According to the reports, the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber driving a vehicle.

Also today, the U.S. military provided further details on an insurgent attack on the prison on 2 April.

The U.S. military said it had killed an estimated 50 guerrilla fighters during the attack on the prison, which is near Baghdad.

The U.S. military statement describes a two-hour insurgent operation conducted by up to 60 guerrillas.

Some 44 U.S. soldiers and 13 detainees were reportedly wounded in that incident.

The military said the assault was halted after U.S. troops backed by attack helicopters and artillery fire countered the attack.
