Explosion Hits Railroad In Daghestan

July 07, 2005

7 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- An explosion hit a section of railroad in Russia's troubled republic of Daghestan today, disrupting rail traffic for several hours but causing no injuries

Akhmed Magomaev, a transportation police official, said the blast occurred outside the capital, Makhachkala, just after midnight as a freight train was passing.

A recent wave of attacks on police have rattled Daghestan, which
borders war-wracked Chechnya, raising fears of widening violence in the Caucasus.

Police waged a two-hour shootout on 6 July in downtown Makhachkala with gunmen allegedly responsible for an explosion a day earlier that tore through a police post, killing two officers and wounding three.

On 1 July, 10 Russian soldiers were killed in a bombing in Makhachkala.
