Iraq Tells World To Give Aid Or Risk Insecurity

19 July 2005 -- Iraqi officials warned the international community today that more delays in delivering on aid pledges would further destabilize the country and threaten global security.

Planning Minister Barham Salih thanked the United States for what it has done to help Iraqis. However, he stressed that Iraq must now become an "international project" to help the people of Iraq overcome the challenge.

Salih was speaking on the second and final day of a meeting of officials from some 60 countries and international organizations at Shuneh, in Jordan. Participants were reviewing Iraq's reconstruction needs and how to coordinate donors activity.

At yesterday's opening session, Salih said Iraq had received just $7 billion of the $32 billion pledged by foreign countries.
