Iran Rejects Latest EU Nuclear Proposals

6 August 2005 -- Iran has rejected the European Union's latest offer to provide incentives in exchange for suspension of Iran's nuclear development programs.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said today in Tehran that the European proposals are not acceptable.

Britain, France, and Germany have been negotiating with Iran for two years on ending Iran's nuclear development.

Their latest proposal was that the EU would supply Iran with fuel for light-water nuclear power reactors. In return, Iran would be obligated to return all the spent fuel. Spent fuel can be used in atomic weaponry.

Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Hussein Musavian, said at the time it was offered that the latest EU proposal was "unacceptable." But Asefi said then that Iran would respond officially in one or two days.

Today's rejection evidently was that response.
