Russia Tests Ballistic Missile

17 August 2005 (RFE/RL) - A Russian submarine today fired an intercontinental ballistic missile with dummy nuclear warheads from the Barents Sea during naval exercises.

Military officials said the missile successfully flew some 8,000 kilometers to its target on the Kura test range on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Far East.

Russian President Vladimir Putin observed the launch and maneuvers of the Northern Fleet from the cruiser "Peter the Great."

Last year, two submarines failed to launch intercontinental ballistic missiles during war games observed by Putin, causing embarrassment after his pledges to restore Russia's military might.
