Iran Says Cholera Outbreak Under Control

August 21, 2005

One-quarter of cholera cases have occurred in the Tehran Province

21 August 2005 -- The Iranian Health Ministry said today it has managed to bring an outbreak of cholera under control but is still concerned that infections could surge again in the south of the country.

According to the latest figures, 10 people have died from cholera in Iran, while 764 have been infected. Around one-quarter of the infections have occurred in Tehran Province.

Mohsen Zahrai, a senior Health Ministry official, told AFP that "for the moment" everything is under control.

But he added that public health experts are concerned that as the south of the country cools off as summer ends, temperatures could reach levels that are ideal for cholera bacteria.
