EU Threatens To Take Iran To United Nations

Is a date with the Security Council in Iran's future?

1 September 2005 -- European Union foreign ministers agreed today that Iran should return to talks on its nuclear-development program or be referred to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions.

Speaking at the informal meeting, EU foreign-policy chief Javier Solana said the bloc is waiting to see if Iran will comply with a deadline this week set by UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The IAEA gave Iran until 3 September to stop all work on making nuclear-reactor fuel that could be used in making weapons.

Solana said the IAEA board of governors is due to meet on 19 September to discuss Iran's compliance with international nuclear regulations. Solana said the EU will give Iran until then to resume talks.

Iran insists its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes.
