Kazakh Opposition Nominates Presidential Candidate

10 September 2005 -- Kazakhstan's main opposition movement today nominated Zharmakhan Tuyakbai, former speaker of the lower house of parliament, to be their candidate in presidential elections set for December.

Kaldarkhan Kambar, a representative of the opposition movement For a Just Kazakhstan, told reporters today in Almaty that Tuyakbai would hand in his registration to the Central Election Commission on Monday.

Incumbent President Nursultan Nazarbaev and Senator Ualikhan Kaisarov of Karaganda province have also stated their intention to run in the 4 December election.

Tuyakbai was a senior figure in Nazarbaev's Otan party until last year when he criticized the results of the country's parliamentary elections and went over to the opposition.
