Police Officer Killed In Daghestan Shoot-Out

September 13, 2005

13 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Police in Daghestan came under submachine-gun fire overnight, killing one officer.

ITAR-TASS quoted a local Interior Ministry spokesman today as saying one police officer was also injured in the shooting in Buinaksk.

An ethnically mixed, mostly Muslim region, Daghestan has been hit by frequent bombings and shootings in the past year.

Most of the attacks target police and other law enforcement authorities and are linked to extremist violence or criminal groups.
