Kazakh Oppositionist Now A Presidential Candidate

October 17, 2005

17 October 2005 -- Zharmakhan Tuyakbai, who heads Kazakhstan's main opposition movement, has been officially registered as a candidate in Kazakhstan's 4 December presidential election.

Tuyakbai, a former parliament speaker, is the leader of the For a Just Kazakhstan opposition coalition. He held a top post in Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev's Otan party until last year, when he said results from the country's parliamentary elections were fraudulent. He then joined the opposition.
