Two More Azerbaijan Officials Sacked

24 October 2005 -- Azerbaijani authorities have sacked two more officials amid an ongoing investigation into an alleged plot to overthrow the government.

There were no official reasons today for the sackings of Ilqar Rahimzada, the deputy police chief in Baku's Nasimi district, and Fikret Sadigov, the head of the state-run chemicals firm Azerkhimiya.

The dismissals follow the arrests last week of former Health Minister Ali Insanov, former Economics Minister Farkhad Aliyev and Aliyev's brother, Rafiq.

The three are accused of conspiring with an exiled opposition leader to incite unrest and seize power in Azerbaijan.

Today's sackings come a day after several demonstrators were detained in Baku amid reports police used violence to break up an opposition rally.

The 23 October rally was the latest in a series of opposition protests ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for 6 November.
