Governor Reappointed In Russia's Stavropol Krai

(RFE/RL)

1 November 2005 -- The incumbent governor of Russia's southern Stavropol Krai, Aleksandr Chernogorov, has been reappointed to a third term.

The regional legislature unanimously approved Chernogorov's reappointment yesterday after President Vladimir Putin had earlier submitted his candidacy to the Stavropol duma.

Putin had named Chernogorov as his choice for regional governor in September. But Putin delayed his nomination after a pensioner complained in a televised conference with the president about the lack of water supplies to her village.

Russian news agencies reported that it took Chernogorov two weeks to have the 20-kilometer water-supply line repaired.

Chernogorov's current term as governor expires in December.
