Kazakh Opposition Supporter's Daughter Still Missing

November 04, 2005

(RFE/RL)

4 November 2005 -- Kazakh police say they are searching for the 14-year-old daughter of a Kazakh opposition activist who went missing this week.

Yelena Nikitina is the deputy chief of a support group backing presidential candidate Zharmakhan Tuyakbai, who heads the For a Just Kazakhstan opposition bloc. She says her daughter Oksanna disappeared on the evening of 31 October.

Nikitina says that before Oksanna's disappearance, she was contacted several times by police, who wanted her to pass them information regarding her group's activities.

Nikitina says she refused. She also says that she brought videotaped evidence of the meetings to the Almaty Prosecutor-General's Office, which the office has denied.

The Associated Press today quotes Almaty city police spokesman Dulat Omarzhanov as saying police are doing all they can to find the girl. He also denied that police had pressured Nikitina.
