Azerbaijan's Constitutional Court Approves Election Results

December 01, 2005

Azerbaijan's political opposition has staged rallies calling for new polls (RFE/RL)

1 December 2005 -- Azerbaijan's Constitutional Court today approved the results of the disputed 6 November parliamentary elections.

Court Chairman Farhad Abdullayev said the outcome of the vote had been confirmed in 115 of Azerbaijan's 125 electoral districts.

The court canceled results in six districts, including one where Ali Kerimli, the head of the reformist wing of the opposition Popular Front Party, was leading.

Election authorities have voided the outcome of the vote in four other districts.

No date has yet been set for repeat elections in the 10 districts where results were cancelled.

According to the final tally, the ruling Yeni Azerbaycan (New Azerbaijan) party has won at least 54 seats in the 125-member parliament.

The opposition says the 6 November election was fraudulent and is demanding that new polls be held.
