Georgian Troops Find Weapons Stash Near Chechen Border
12 December 2005 -- Georgian border guards have discovered a large arms cache in the country's mountain region of Khevsureti, which borders the Russian republic of Chechnya.
Troops made the discovery late yesterday in a forest near the Georgian village of Barisakho.
Georgia's Border Guard Department reported that the cache included 38 NURS-type rocket-propelled projectiles. Thirteen handmade missile launchers were also found.
The head of the Border Guard Department, Badri Bitsadze, said the projectiles and launchers have been placed in a depot in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi. He said it is not yet known to whom the weapons belonged.
Russia in the past has accused Chechen militants of stockpiling weapons in and around Georgia's Pankisi Gorge, east of Barisakho.
