22 December 2005 -- Terrorism and conflicts across the Middle East will be major global issues in 2006, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said at a year-end news conference.

Speaking at a year-end news conference on 21 December, Annan also lashed out at the media for its coverage of the UN's oil-for-food program, calling coverage of his role and that of his son's in the now-finished humanitarian program in Iraq unfair.

He said he faced getting tough management-reform proposals through the UN General Assembly and trying to solve the ongoing conflict in Sudan's Darfur region and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

But he expected terrorism, weapons of mass destruction and the Middle East to be the major issues in the new year. Annan's second five-year term ends in December 2006.
