Europe Concerned About Iran's Enrichment Plan

4 January 2006 -- France and Germany have voiced concern over Iran's plans to resume its nuclear fuel research program.

Iran yesterday notified the UN's nuclear agency, the IAEA, that it had decided to go ahead with the research as soon as next week.

French Foreign Ministry spokesman Jean-Baptiste Mattei today called Iran's announcement "very worrying" and said "full doubts remain" about the goals of Iran's nuclear program.

In Berlin, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Iran's decision could endanger the next round of nuclear talks with Germany, France and Britain. Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, has called Tehran's decision "not negotiable."

Iran suspended its nuclear research program in 2003 as part of a deal with the European Union to halt its uranium processing and enrichment.
