Georgia To Remain In CIS

January 25, 2006

25 January 2006 -- The Georgian government has decided not to withdraw from the Russian-led Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Levan Choladze said the cabinet, which met on 25 January, had weighed up carefully all the possible political, economic, and social implications of a such a move.

Opposition lawmakers initiated a parliamentary debate in November on whether Georgia should remain in the CIS following a visa dispute with Russia.

Prime Minister Zurab Noghaideli spoke out against withdrawal during that debate.
