Kyrgyz Tighten Border With Tajikistan

January 30, 2006

30 January 2006 -- Kyrgyzstan has tightened controls at checkpoints on the border with Tajikistan and put border outposts on high alert.

The announcement was made today by the press service of the National Security Service's border troops.

The measures followed an armed attack against a prison in Tajikistan's northern Sughd Province on 25 January.

The attackers killed the prison director, Bobojan Gadibaiev, and freed a prisoner with suspected ties to the banned Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), a militant group that advocates the imposition of a global caliphate.

A local prosecutor, Abdughafor Ghalandarov, said the group had been increasingly active since an uprising in the Uzbek city of Andijon in May 2005.

Uzbek and international authorities have labeled IMU a terrorist organization.
