4 February 2006 -- Police officials in the southern Russian republic of Daghestan say they have arrested two men suspected of involvement in armed attacks against security forces.

One was arrested in Leninaul in the north-west and the other in Manas, just south of the capital, Makhachkala. The arrests were made on 3 February and disclosed on 4 February.

Daghestan, which is predominantly Muslim and borders Chechnya, has suffered repeated attacks by Chechen rebels and local militants.  Last year alone, more than 40 police officers were reported killed in attacks.
