Tajikistan Not Prepared For Bird-Flu Outbreak

10 February 2006 -- A Tajik health official today said that Tajikistan's government is not financially prepared to handle a possible outbreak of bird flu in the country, and called for international assistance to prevent the spread of the avian virus.

Deputy Health Minister Ziyovuddin Afghonov said the government has estimated that it needs about $13.5 million to prevent bird flu from spreading to Tajikistan. He said proposals on the matter have been drafted and sent to international organizations, asking for help.

Afghanov said that bird flu has not been detected in the Central Asian country.
