Hamas Submits Proposed Cabinet To Abbas

Palestinian Authority President Mahmud Abbas (RFE/RL)

March 19, 2006 -- Palestinian Prime Minister-designate Ismail Haniyeh today submitted his proposed cabinet list to Palestinian Authority President Mahmud Abbas.

Haniyeh said the list includes 24 ministers -- 10 from Gaza and 14 from the West Bank. Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahar is the proposed Palestinian foreign minister.

Hamas conducted talks with other Palestinian factions following its landslide victory in January legislative elections but failed to persuade them to join a coalition.

If Abbas approves the list, he must submit it to the Palestinian legislature for approval.
