U.S. Soldier Killed In Southern Afghanistan

Helmand Province is a stronghold of both Taliban elements and the booming drug trade (epa)

March 25, 2006 -- A U.S. soldier was killed in a clash with suspected Taliban rebels in Afghanistan's southern Helmand Province today.

The U.S. military said coalition forces and Afghan troops backed by U.S. aircraft early today engaged in fighting with some 20 suspected Taliban insurgents in the province's Sangin district.

Another U.S. soldier and one Afghan soldier were injured. An Afghan military commander said at least six Taliban insurgents were killed.

Helmand Province has been a bastion of Taliban insurgency. It is also Afghanistan's main opium-growing region with a booming drugs trade.
