Sayed Sadeq, the speaker of the Takhar provincial governing assembly, died in hospital after receiving multiple gunshot wounds to his body.

The local deputy police chief, Ghulam Hazarat, said it was not clear who was behind the killing. The attack was the latest in a series of attacks on regional officials and local police commanders in Afghanistan.

Authorities have blamed most of the attacks on the Taliban.
