Forty Militants Killed In Pakistan Near Afghan Border

April 6, 2006 -- At least 40 militants have died in heavy clashes in a tribal region near the Afghan border in the past couple of days, Pakistani officials report.

The army earlier reported that 16 militants and four soldiers died in the fighting, after the Pakistani army launched a counterattack on April 5 after an overnight attack by militants sympathetic to the Taliban.


Pakistani forces have been involved in intense fighting in North Waziristan for the past month.
