Afghan President Hails Confidence Vote On Cabinet

PRAGUE, April 21, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Afghanistan 's President Hamid Karzai today welcomed parliament's approval of most of his nominees to the cabinet.

Karzai said in a statement that the country had successfully passed another test and added that the country's lawmakers had made their choice without regard for ethnic and factional backgrounds.


On April 20, the Afghan parliament approved 20 of the nominees, including the appointment of a former adviser to Karzai on foreign affairs, Rangin Dadfar Spanta, to the post of foreign minister.


The United States also welcomed the vote as "another important step forward " on Afghanistan's democratic path.
