Pakistan Top Priority For New Afghan Foreign Minister

April 27, 2006 - Afghanistan's new foreign minister, Rangin Dadfar Spanta, said today that improving relations with Pakistan is the country's foreign policy priority.

Spanta expressed hope the two neighbors could work together to fight terrorism.

Ties between the two countries soured recently after accusations by Afghanistan that Pakistan is not doing enough to stop forces associated with the ousted Taliban regime from entering Afghanistan.

The UN special representative to Afghanistan, Tom Koenigs, said on April 27 that he has seen "a growing commitment to stability in the region" on Pakistan's part, but urged Pakistan to do more to prevent the spread of Taliban-linked militia inside its territory and in Afghanistan.
