Former Top Romanian Official Charged With Bribery

May 10, 2006 -- A former senior Romanian government official will be tried on bribery charges and illegally owning weapons.

Romania's National Anticorruption Department said Serban Mihailescu, who was the former left-wing government's secretary-general, is charged with receiving nine hunting rifles from an aide in exchange for keeping him as a government adviser.


The aide is already serving a six-year prison sentence for a separate corruption case.
