Russian General Concerned By U.S. Missile Plan

May 24, 2006

May 24, 2006 -- The chief of the Russian military's General Staff today expressed concern at the possibility of U.S. interceptor missiles being deployed close to Russia's borders.

The United States is proposing to set up a network of interceptor missiles in Central Europe to ward off potential attacks.

Washington has said the network of missiles would be established not with Russia in mind, but against attacks from countries such as China, Iran, and North Korea.

General Yury Baluyevsky said he believes Russian intercontinental missile systems would be more than a match for the planned U.S. missile system.
