Kyrgyz Officials Skittish About Planned Protests

May 26, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Kyrgyz authorities have reconsidered a decision to hold a military parade on Bishkek's central square tomorrow, the day opposition supporters were due to rally there against the government.

RFE/RL’s Kyrgyz Service quotes President Kurmanbek Bakiev’s spokesman Nadyr Momunov as saying the military parade, designed to mark Army Day, will take place on May 29 instead.

Army Day festivities traditionally take place on May 29. But Defense Minister Ismail Isakov this week said they would exceptionally take place two days earlier.

Isakov also denied the decision was aimed at disrupting the opposition’s plans.
