Iraqi Authorities Seize Suspected Insurgent Commander

May 30, 2006 -- Iraqi security forces have arrested a suspected insurgent commander blamed for the deaths of hundreds of civilians, including a series of beheadings in various parts of the country.

A statement from the office of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said that Ahmed Hussein Dabash Samer al-Battawi was arrested in the Firdos district of Baghdad on May 29.


In fresh violence today, at least five people were killed in a bombing in Al-Hillah, south of Baghdad, and two female employees of the Interior Ministry were killed by a mortar round fired at the ministry.
