UNHCR Says Uzbek Refugee In Kazakh Detention

Temirboev was detained in the Kazakh city of Almaty June 24 despite having UN refugee status. His whereabouts had been unknown.
Cesar Dubon, the UNHCR representative in Kazakhstan, told RFE/RL today that the Kazakh Foreign Ministry had informed the agency that Temirboev has been held in Kazakh police detention.
"Unfortunately, we do not know very much," Dubon said. "What we know through telephone conversations that we had with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is that Mr. Temirboev is under detention by the police authorities of Kazakhstan. We do not know of his situation, except what we know from his wife [who] had spoken to him the same day that he was detained last Saturday [June 24]."
Dubon said the UNHCR is trying to get access to Temirboev, who has been held incommunicado. He added that the Kazakh Foreign Ministry did not give information about charges brought against Temirboev.
Temirboev has lived in Kazakhstan with his family since 1999 and was given a refugee status on June 16.
