July 2, 2006 -- The U.K. Defense Ministry confirmed today that two of its soldiers were killed in Afghanistan.

The ministry said the two were killed in Afghanistan's southern Helmand Province late on July 1, when their base came under fire. British military spokesman Captain Drew Gibson said the British base came under attack the two previous nights also.

Meanwhile, Helmand police chief Mohammad Nabi said Afghan and coalition troops and Afghan police fought with suspected Taliban militants in the same region. Nabi said 12 Taliban militants were killed in that fighting.

It was not clear if the Taliban militants were killed in the same battle as the British troops.
