July 17, 2006 -- The head of Russia's presidential human rights council says she has asked the country's prosecutor-general to look into claims that police detained and intimidated a large number of anti-G8 protesters.
Ella Pamfilova, who heads the Presidential Council on Civil Institutions and Human Rights, says she wants police officers who violated the protesters' rights to be punished.
On July 16, 40 anti-G8 protesters were detained at a demonstration in central St. Petersburg.
