August 30, 2006 -- Top diplomats from Iran and China met in Beijing today to discuss Tehran's nuclear program, a day before a UN deadline for Iran to halt uranium enrichment or face possible sanctions.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the two men stressed the importance of solving Tehran's nuclear dispute with the world community through diplomacy.
In a press conference on August 29, Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad gave no indication that Tehran plans to stop enriching uranium. He said Iran will not be prevented from pursuing peaceful nuclear technology.
Gholamreza Aqazadeh, who heads the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said on August 30 that he will go to Russia at some point next week to discuss the proposal drafted by Germany and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
The package offers Iran incentives to halt its sensitive nuclear activities.
Both China and Russia have said they are against international sanctions being imposed on Iran.
