September 5, 2006 -- Former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami says Iran would accept the creation of a Palestinian state living alongside Israel if the Palestinians' elected Hamas government freely adopted such an outcome.
Khatami, considered a moderate backer of reform in Iran, told Britain's "Financial Times" newspaper in an interview that Iran seeks a "sustainable peace" in the Middle East between Muslims, Jews, and Christians.
Khatami gave the interview during his current private tour of the United States.
